First Impressions: Lies of P

Having known for some time that 2023 gothic RPG Lies of P would most likely be right up my alley, I’ve always had it in the back of my mind, but when it recently caught my eye in the “leaving soon” list on Xbox Game Pass, I knew I had procrastinated long enough. I don’t normally gravitate towards soulslike games but Lies of P’s stellar reviews and standout ambience told me it was more than worth trying out. And since I often rely on my Game Pass subscription for finding and trying out games without any big commitment, I was able to note my “first impressions” just in time!

Yes, I admit, I’m nowhere near finished with Lies of P, but I’ve progressed through enough of it that I feel comfortable recommending it to literally anybody. Sometimes I find games with feedback this exceptional to have more flaws than people want to admit. That is not my experience with Lies of P. On the contrary, I’m… having a hard time finding anything to critique. The gothic/steampunk atmosphere is totally engulfing, the balance between combat and story is just how I like it, and the fighting mechanics are borderline addicting. As I mentioned, soulslike games aren’t my favorite as they often bring out the rage quitter in me and I never pick them back up. But something about how this game is done makes me eager to try again, no matter how many times it takes. The difficulty, either by the game’s design or my increasing understanding of the mechanics, seems to wane a little as the levels go on, which definitely helps motivate me to keep going. I can’t wait to finish the game and sincerely hope you try it out!
